What about the crowds & costs?

There is a significant flood of tourists in Rome in August, resulting in more travellers and higher prices than at other times of the year. The most popular attractions such as the Colosseum, the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps will be especially crowded. Because of the high demand, accommodation prices are also usually higher in August.

Eating out in popular areas can be more expensive, as restaurants cater to crowds of tourists. However, you can find more budget-friendly options by exploring local restaurants away from the main tourist areas.

To get the most out of your trip to Rome in August, we recommend booking your tickets for top attractions, tours and accommodation well in advance of your travel dates. Also, while it's a wonderful thing to visit iconic landmarks, don't forget to explore lesser-known neighbourhoods and attractions to experience a more authentic and less crowded side of Rome.

Additionally, visiting popular sights early in the morning or late at night will help you avoid the crowds and also provide great lighting for photography.

What to wear in Rome in August?

In terms of recommended clothing for the weather in Rome in August, the first thing to take care of is to make sure that your clothes are as comfortable as possible for being out in the heat.

Choose lightweight and breathable fabrics such as cotton, linen or moisture-wicking material. Loose-fitting clothes will ensure you stay cool and comfortable in the summer heat. Given that Rome is best experienced on foot, it's crucial to equip yourself with comfortable shoes that offer good support.

Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. This will not only protect you from the sun's rays but will also add a touch of style to your outfit.

If you plan to visit the nearby coast and take a dip in the sea, don't forget to bring your swimming costume and beach essentials.

Also, remember that if you are going to visit religious sites in Rome, both women and men should wear clothes that cover their shoulders and knees as a sign of respect.

How to survive the August heat?

To survive the scorching weather in Rome in August, there are a few fundamental tips to take note of to keep cool and comfortable and make the most of your summer trip:

  • Use SPF sunscreen: First and foremost, you need to protect your skin from the intense sun by frequently applying sunscreen with a high SPF level. Look for products with a broad spectrum of protection to protect your skin from both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Wear a hat and sunglasses: A headgear with a brim will provide good shade for your face, neck and shoulders, minimising direct exposure to the sun's rays, while sunglasses with UV protection will keep your eyes safe from harmful radiation.
  • Stay hydrated: Hot weather can lead to dehydration, so it's important to carry a reusable water bottle and drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Seek air-conditioned accommodation options: When choosing an accommodation, pay attention to the availability of air conditioning. Air conditioning will provide a comfortable environment to relax and unwind after a day spent in the heat.
  • Plan indoor activities during the hottest hours: As the midday sun can be most intense, consider planning indoor activities such as visiting museums, shopping or relaxing in a café during these hours. For outdoor sightseeing, postpone it until early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler.
  • Take advantage of fountains and water features: Rome is peppered with beautiful fountains and pools of water. Splash your face, wet your hands or dip your feet in the cool water to refresh yourself as you stroll around the sights.
