Day 1: Arrive in Mexico City

Mexico City hits you with energy from the get-go. Start at the Zócalo, the heart of the city since Aztec times. Be sure to catch the daily flag ceremony – soldiers lowering the massive Mexican flag is a powerful sight.

Next, explore the Templo Mayor ruins next to the cathedral. Visit between 10 AM and 2 PM for fewer crowds and the best photo lighting. As you wander, look for colonial buildings resting on ancient Aztec foundations – you'll spot exposed archaeological windows if you look closely.

For lunch, head to Mercado de San Juan. Skip the touristy front and explore the back, where local chefs shop. Try the ceviche from the seafood vendors or get adventurous with escamoles (ant larvae), a surprising delicacy that tastes like nutty butter.

Where to stay in Mexico City

Day 2: Travel to San Miguel de Allende

Travel time: 4 hours by bus

San Miguel de Allende is a showstopper, consistently ranked as one of the world's most beautiful cities. Its colonial charm, with perfectly preserved 17th and 18th-century buildings, is matched by a mild climate year-round and a thriving arts scene. Artists have flocked here for generations, finding inspiration in its cobblestone streets and vibrant colors. San Miguel is also historically significant, being the birthplace of Mexico's independence movement.

The elevation here is 6,200 feet (1,890 meters), so take it easy your first few hours - even seasoned travelers can feel the altitude.

How to get there

To reach San Miguel, take a Primera Plus bus from Mexico City's Terminal Norte. These blue and white buses offer comfort and reliability. Book tickets in advance, especially during peak season, as the best seats fill up quickly. For scenic views, grab a seat on the right side of the bus. Taxis at the bus terminal offer a safe ride directly to the city center.

Where to stay in San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende offers a variety of neighborhoods, each with its own charm, allowing you to experience the city in different ways.

  • Centro Histórico: Stay in the heart of San Miguel to experience colonial charm, cobblestone streets, and close proximity to iconic landmarks.
  • Guadiana: A quiet residential neighborhood offering easy access to the center, perfect for those seeking a peaceful retreat.
  • San Antonio: A creative enclave filled with art studios, galleries, and an eclectic mix of local and international residents.
  • Atascadero: Nestled on a hillside, this area boasts stunning views, traditional haciendas, and a serene escape from the busy city center.

Day 3: Explore the old center of San Miguel de Allende

Start your 3rd day of this week-long Mexico itinerary in El Jardín as the sun rises and the first light hits the Parroquia's pink spires. Join a free historical walking tour (they gather near the church entrance at 10 AM), where local guides will take you through the city's fascinating past, from colonial times to the independence movement.

Next, visit Fábrica La Aurora, a former textile factory now home to galleries and cafes, perfect for browsing local art. Don't miss the Mercado de Artesanías, especially the back section where you can watch local artisans at work in their workshops.

In the afternoon check out Instituto Allende to view student art exhibitions and the stunning murals. Stop by the Biblioteca Pública to explore its courtyard and art-filled halls, or head to El Mirador for panoramic city views.

Finish your day with cocktails at Luna or La Azotea, rooftop bars offering unbeatable sunset views of the Parroquia, before enjoying a delicious dinner at one of the many family-run restaurants on Calle Hidalgo.

Day 4: Travel to San Cristobal de las Casas

Travel time: Approximately 20 hours total, including the stop in Mexico City

The journey to San Cristobal de las Casas is long but offers a unique look at Mexico's changing landscapes. The trip is split into two parts: first, a 4-hour ride back to Mexico City, then the longer stretch to Chiapas. While it may seem daunting, ADO's luxury buses make it surprisingly comfortable, with reclining seats and plenty of legroom.

Back to Mexico City

The return leg to Mexico City takes 4 hours. Download maps and entertainment before departure, as bus WiFi can be inconsistent through the mountains. Buses maintain powerful air conditioning - a light sweater proves invaluable.

Mexico City to San Cristobal de las Casas

The overnight ADO bus ride to San Cristobal de las Casas offers a great view of Mexico's changing landscapes, as the route takes you through mountains and valleys. Be sure to bring snacks and water, although the bus will stop at clean, well-maintained restaurants for breaks. Keep your ticket handy, as it will be checked several times during the journey.

Day 5: Explore San Cristobal de las Casas

San Cristobal de las Casas sits high in the Chiapas mountains, 7,200 feet above sea level, with cool air and charming cobblestone streets. The city mixes colonial history with the living traditions of the Tzotzil and Tzeltal communities, who continue to practice their ancestral customs. You'll find their vibrant textiles and amber jewelry throughout the local markets.

Things to do

Real de Guadalupe is a bustling street lined with cafes, perfect for enjoying some of Mexico's best coffee. Be sure to visit the Santo Domingo church and nearby market, where Indigenous artisans showcase their beautifully crafted textiles.

For lunch, try local favorites like sopa de pan (bread soup) or cochito horneado (baked pork). If you're up early, grab some of the best tamales from Indigenous vendors setting up near the market at dawn. End your day at a cozy mezcal bar, where you can sample spirits made in the Chiapas highlands.

Meet the Tzotzil Maya: Mexico's most intriguing community: Wallets and Bags, Chiapas, Mexico.

Day 6: Day trip to Palenque

Palenque is one of Mexico's most impressive archaeological sites, tucked deep in the jungle where howler monkeys rule the treetops. The ancient ruins are far less crowded than those of Chichen Itza, but they offer a more intimate experience. With stunning architecture and well-preserved carved reliefs, Palenque provides an paralleled glimpse into Maya royal history.

How to get there

Tours leave San Cristobal early in the morning, winding through the jungle on a bumpy ride. If you're prone to motion sickness, bring medication, along with water, insect repellent, and sun protection.

The transition from highlands to jungle means a noticeable increase in humidity, so be prepared for the change in climate. Many tours include stops at Agua Azul or Misol-Ha waterfalls, which are beautiful additions to the trip. Arrive at Palenque early to catch the magical mist rising from the jungle.

Day 7: Departure or continue

Before leaving San Cristobal, be sure to pick up some local coffee beans – Chiapas is known for producing some of Mexico's finest coffee. If you're continuing your journey, consider exploring the coast of Chiapas or visiting more of the state's charming pueblo mágicos. For those heading back to Mexico City, morning flights from Tuxtla Gutierrez are your best bet, as they help you avoid the afternoon rains that often cause delays in the region.
