With Corfu’s carnival usually taking place in mid-to-late-February (sometimes March —check dates before travelling), visitors to the island at this time can look forward to a uniquely special experience. 

Corfu Carnival

Inspired by the Venetians, the Corfiot Carnival is quite something to behold, with a Grand Parade through the streets serving a kaleidoscope of costumes and revelry.

Everything culminates with the burning of King Carnival. Said to carry the sins of local folk, this burning of a symbolic figure equates to a cleansing, with an accompanying satirical will-reading often referencing local politics.

After the big burning, the island blazes with costume parties, dancing, singing and feasting through the night.

What to wear in Corfu in February

Given that Corfu’s average temperature sits around 10°C in February, with lows of 6°C, you’ll need to pack jumpers and jackets, and wear a winter coat.

Also, don’t forget your brolly, waterproof coat or jacket, and shoes that are suitable for walking in wet weather.

Check for seasonal closures

As mentioned above, note that many hotels, resorts, bars and restaurants close their doors during quieter winter months like February. 

That said, plenty of places will be open — you just need to do your research, book wisely, and look forward to a more authentic, less touristy experience of the island. 

Consider renting a car 

Related to seasonal closures, while Corfu’s public transport system doesn’t shut-down during out-of-season months like February, bus services are likely to be reduced.
