Average daily temperatures in December
In December, temperatures usually range from 37°F to 46°F (3°C to 8°C). Daytime highs hover around 45°F (7°C), but it can drop close to freezing at night, especially inland or in the mountains. The sea is also cold, around 50°F (10°C), so unless you're a cold-water swimming enthusiast with the right gear, you'll probably want to avoid a dip.
With only about 8 hours of daylight—sunrise around 8:00 AM and sunset by 4:00 PM—the days feel short and a bit compressed. The longer evenings can be great for sitting by the fire.
December weather can be a bit challenging, with plenty of gray days, rain, and even snow at higher altitudes. But if you're up for some careful planning and have good waterproof gear, you can still enjoy activities like hiking or coastal walks.
What about the crowd and cost?
December is generally part of Wales's low season, so you're likely to find fantastic deals—accommodation prices can be 30-40% lower than in summer. Attractions are quieter, giving you more room to explore. However, note that the week between Christmas and New Year is an exception. Domestic tourists flock to celebrate the vacations, and prices rise accordingly.
If you're after the winter charm without vacation crowds, January and February are even quieter. For better weather and similar pricing, consider May or September. And if you want the best weather, summer is the time to go—just expect higher costs and bigger crowds. Not convinced this is the month for you? See our guide to the best time to visit Wales.
