Day01

Reykjavik to Akureyri and Lake Myvatn

Catch a morning flight from Reykjavik to Akureyri to maximize your Iceland travel day, trading long drives for more time on the ground. Pick up your rental car, meet your local host to fine-tune the route, then enjoy Akureyri’s streets, cafés, and botanical gardens, with optional whale watching or a hot pool soak.

Continue to Lake Myvatn for Hverir and Leirhnjukur’s steaming geothermal fields, Dimmuborgir’s lava formations, Skutustadagigar pseudo craters, and the Viti and Hverfjall craters, ending at the Grjotagja lava cave and spring made famous by Game of Thrones.

Dettifoss, Jokulsargljufur and Husavik

Visit Asbyrgi’s dramatic horseshoe canyon and the turquoise Botnstjorn pond, then stand before Dettifoss for one of Iceland’s most powerful waterfall moments. Continue through the 25 km Jokulsargljufur canyon to Vesturdalur, home to the Hljodaklettar basalt formations and the colorful Raudholar hills.

Finish in Husavik for a whale watching cruise and a relaxing soak at the GeoSea geothermal sea baths.

North West Iceland, Akureyri and Godafoss

Explore North West Iceland from Akureyri, one of the best places to visit in Iceland for its charming downtown and the Lystigardurinn botanical gardens. Stop at Godafoss, the picture-perfect Waterfall of the Gods. Then choose a scenic coastal drive along the Troll peninsula to colorful Siglufjordur.
