Arenal hasn’t had a big eruption since 2010, so you won’t see lava, but it’s still an amazing place to visit. Try to stay on the north side where you can actually see the volcano from your hotel room—it’s something else to wake up to that view. The hot springs are worth it too. Tabacón is really nice but pricey, while Ecotermales is smaller and feels more relaxed. Do the hanging bridges early in the morning before the tours show up.

The food’s not spicy or fancy, but it’s fresh and comforting. Expect a lot of rice and beans, plantains, and simple grilled meat or fish. Gallo pinto for breakfast is the real deal, and you'll probably miss it once you leave. You can drink the tap water in most of the country, but if you're heading somewhere rural, it’s smart to bring a reusable bottle with a filter just in case.

Costa Rica itinerary FAQ

When is the best time to take a 14 day trip to Costa Rica?

The best time to visit Costa Rica is during dry season, from mid-December through April. This is when the Pacific side gets the most sun, roads are easier to navigate, and wildlife is more active in national parks. January to March usually has the most consistent weather. If you don’t mind some afternoon rain, the green season (May to November) has fewer crowds, lush scenery, and lower prices. The Caribbean coast actually sees its best weather in September and October. For sea turtles and whales, aim for July to October or December to April. Book early for high-season favorites.
