As the season moves toward the short rains, the weather in Tanzania in October starts to change more noticeably. Even so, a lot of days are dry and warm. Late in the month, afternoon showers begin to develop, although they’re typically short and won’t interfere with travel or excursions. In central and northern parks, the grass is sparse and water sources are limited, meaning wildlife stays concentrated in accessible areas. Zanzibar begins to feel more tropical, and lush vegetation returns to the landscape. October is a terrific month to visit Tanzania for those seeking fewer tourists, favorable game sightings, and more picturesque surroundings.
Dry weather generally holds across the country during the short rainy season. It’s a rewarding time for travelers who prefer less crowded attractions compared to peak dry-season months.
If you're planning a trip to Tanzania, October offers a quieter, more flexible experience as the weather begins to warm and the country transitions toward the short rains. This month appeals to travelers chasing the last stretch of the dry season – perfect for those who value space, spontaneity, and a less structured Tanzania itinerary.
Northern parks like Serengeti and Ngorongoro stay dry for most of the month, drawing wildlife to rivers and waterholes and making sightings frequent and close-up. With crowds thinning out, safari encounters feel more intimate. Coastal areas and Zanzibar may see brief showers as humidity increases later in the month, but with high temperatures and plenty of sunshine, the beaches remain ideal for swimming and diving.
Tourist numbers are lower than in August and September, allowing for greater reservation flexibility and a more peaceful atmosphere in both lodges and parks. Prices also begin to dip, making this one of the smartest times to travel – and for many, one of the best times to visit Tanzania.

October marks the tail end of the dry season in Tanzania, and temperatures begin to rise slightly, particularly in lowland and coastal regions.
In the Serengeti and northern circuit, daytime highs average around 83°F (28°C), while nighttime temperatures remain mild at about 60°F (16°C). Elevated areas like Arusha and Ngorongoro stay cooler, with daily highs near 75°F (24°C) and nighttime lows around 52°F (11°C). Morning game drives may still require an extra layer.
On the coast, Zanzibar experiences warmer, more humid conditions. Daytime highs reach 88°F (31°C), and nighttime lows hover around 75°F (24°C). Short bursts of rain may appear late in the month. Southern regions, including Ruaha and Nyerere, are among the hottest. Highs range from 88°F to 93°F (31°C to 34°C), and nights remain warm at around 66°F (19°C).
October in Tanzania sees a gradual decline in tourist numbers as the short rains approach. Northern parks – some of the best places to visit in Tanzania – remain accessible and active. With fewer safari vehicles on the trails, a Tanzania safari this month offers a more intimate and unrushed game-viewing experience. The Indian Ocean resorts and Zanzibar are still warm and appealing but noticeably quieter.
With visitors thinning, costs begin to drop. While luxury accommodations may still charge near high-season rates, mid-range and budget options are more reasonable, and some tour operators may offer discounts. For budget-conscious travelers, October is a smart time to visit – fewer people, lower prices, and plenty of rewarding experiences.
