The weather in Tanzania in December is characterized by mixed weather, as the short rains subside in many places. Sporadic showers linger in the early part of the month, but much of the country experiences extended periods of sunshine and increasing temperatures. Now very green with vegetation, the southern Serengeti’s plains attract the first herds of the Great Migration as safari conditions steadily improve. Both beach resorts and wildlife parks see an upsurge in tourists throughout the festive season. The climate in Zanzibar is hot and muggy with clear skies, making it the perfect place to unwind in a tropical setting.
By the middle of December, weather conditions improve, just in time for Christmas vacation travelers to arrive, making it a vibrant, bustling, and scenic time to explore.
If you're planning a trip to Tanzania, December is a vibrant and rewarding month to consider. Those seeking sunshine, nature, culture, and a lively atmosphere will find that Tanzania in December delivers it all in abundance. The weather can still bring showers, especially early in the month, but they’re typically brief and followed by clearer skies.
This time of year is excellent for both wildlife sightings and tropical beach escapes. The Serengeti’s southern plains welcome the returning herds of the Great Migration, setting the stage for the upcoming calving season – an essential highlight for any well-crafted Tanzania itinerary. In Zanzibar, humidity runs high, but rainfall decreases as the month progresses. Coastal resorts attract vacationers eager to swim, snorkel in pristine waters, and unwind on the sand.
Expect accommodations and tours to fill up quickly during Christmas and New Year’s, when tourism surges. Book well in advance to avoid missing out. Despite the inflated travel costs, December, particularly from mid-month onward, is considered one of the best times to visit Tanzania, with festive energy and sunny, dry conditions setting the tone for a memorable vacation season.

The weather in Tanzania in December marks the conclusion of the short rainy season and a drop in humidity. The average temperature rises a little across most of the country, but the air is fresher.
In the Serengeti and northern parks, average daytime highs reach around 85°F (29°C), while nighttime lows sit near 63°F (17°C). In the highlands, including Arusha and Ngorongoro, temperatures remain cooler due to elevation. Daytime highs average 74°F (23°C), and nights can dip to around 52°F (11°C). Misty mornings and fresh air add to the scenic appeal.
Zanzibar and coastal regions remain more humid. Highs hover around 89°F (32°C), and overnight lows stay around 77°F (25°C). Southern parks such as Ruaha and Nyerere are hot and tropical. Temperatures range from 88°F to 92°F (31°C to 33°C) during the day, with nights around 68°F (20°C).
In the early part of the month, crowds are minimal in Tanzania. However, by mid-December, the country's tourism picks up speed as festive vacation visitors arrive, especially in popular Tanzania safari parks and coastal areas. Destinations like the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Zanzibar rank among the best places to visit in Tanzania, and they become significantly busier during this time.
This late-month demand has a major impact on costs. Prices for accommodations, airfares, and guided tours rise considerably. Travelers planning to visit during the vacations should book well in advance. For a quieter and more affordable experience, early December is the better choice.
