What is the weather in Switzerland in April like?

April feels like the real start of spring in Switzerland. Down in the cities, café terraces are starting to fill up again and people are out walking along lakes and rivers. In the mountains, it’s a bit of a toss-up. Some lower-elevation hikes are snow-free, while ski resorts still have runs open higher up. If you’re looking to do both in one trip, this is a great time to come.

Trains and public transport run reliably, and mountain towns are quieter than they are in summer. You’ll get a mix of sunny days and spring showers, but it’s rarely enough to disrupt travel. April works well for people who want to explore cities like Zurich, Lucerne, or Bern without big crowds. Just make sure to check what’s open in smaller alpine villages before you go. It’s shoulder season, and some places use this time to close up and reset. This can be a great time to plan your Switzerland itinerary.

Average daily temperatures in April

April in Switzerland is unpredictable, but in a good way. You might ski in the morning and sit on a sunny café terrace by afternoon. In cities like Zurich, Lucerne, and Geneva, daytime highs usually reach 54–61°F (12–16°C), while nights cool to around 39–45°F (4–7°C). Mountain towns like Zermatt and St. Moritz stay colder, with daytime temperatures around 37–46°F (3–8°C) and lingering snow.

Lower-altitude hiking trails start to clear, while ski resorts wind down their season, especially at higher elevations. Rain is common, but often comes in short bursts, with breaks of clear blue sky. Trees and flowers begin to bloom, and the lakes look their best with snow still capping the surrounding peaks. April is shoulder season, so you’ll find fewer crowds and better hotel rates, especially outside ski zones. Pack layers, check the forecast, and be ready to pivot — the weather often changes by the hour.

Is April a good time to visit Switzerland?

April in Switzerland is all about in-between season charm. The weather in Switzerland in April can shift quickly, but you’ll get a bit of everything—melting snow in the Alps, fresh greenery in the valleys, and crisp mornings that warm up by midday. Lower-elevation cities like Zurich, Lucerne, and Bern start to bloom, with outdoor markets and lakeside walks picking up again.

In the mountains, higher ski resorts often stay open through the first half of the month, while hiking trails at lower altitudes begin to clear. It’s not quite spring everywhere, but the landscapes are still stunning. Crowds are light, especially in popular tourist towns, and you’ll find better prices on hotels and trains than in summer. Just be ready for shifting weather and plan a flexible itinerary—some days might call for sunglasses and others for a thermal layer and gloves. For more tips, see our guide to how to plan a trip to Switzerland

  • Full bloom of spring with stunning landscapes
  • Perfect conditions for hiking and cycling
  • Longer days with more daylight for activities
  • Fewer crowds at tourist attractions
  • Pleasant weather despite occasional rain showers

What about the crowds & cost?

April falls during the shoulder season, meaning fewer crowds at popular destinations. This results in more affordable accommodation, excursions, and flights compared to the peak summer and winter months. The vibrant spring scenery and the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities often justify a visit during this transitional period.  If you're still deciding, see our guide to the best time to visit Switzerland

What to do in Switzerland in April

You can hit the slopes, wander wildflower trails, or hop from city to mountain in a single day. The key to April is flexibility—it’s a month where forecasts don’t always line up with what you actually get.

Mix skiing with spring hikes

April is one of the only months you can ski and hike in the same week. High-altitude resorts like Zermatt, Verbier, and Saas-Fee usually stay snowy through the month. Lower elevations near Interlaken and Lake Geneva start to open up with green trails and waterfall hikes like the one to Trümmelbach Falls.

Take scenic train rides

If the weather’s mixed, Switzerland’s trains are a great way to keep exploring. April is a perfect time to ride routes like the Glacier Express or the Bernina Express. You’ll pass snow-dusted peaks, green valleys, and still-frozen lakes—all from the comfort of a warm panoramic car.

Explore spring markets and Easter traditions

April is when Swiss towns start to come back to life. You’ll find spring markets selling cheese, herbs, and handmade goods, especially in rural areas. In some regions, Easter processions and traditional decorations add a festive edge to the month. It’s a good time to catch local culture without big summer crowds.

Where to go in Switzerland in April

April in Switzerland is a true in-between season. The snow hasn’t fully cleared from the Alps, but lower elevations are turning green and blooming. You can ski in the morning and sit by a lake in the afternoon. It’s unpredictable, but that’s what makes it fun.

Lucerne

Lucerne makes a great base in April. The lakeside city is easy to explore on foot, and the old town looks even better with spring flowers coming in. You can take a boat ride on Lake Lucerne or a cogwheel train up Mount Pilatus, which still has snow at the top. Museums and cafés stay open whatever the weather.

Zermatt

Zermatt is still in ski season in April, and it’s one of the best places to catch late snow. The elevators stay open well into the month, and the Matterhorn views are dramatic year-round. Even if you don’t ski, the train ride in is scenic, and you can take the Gornergrat railroad up for panoramic mountain views.

Ticino

In the south, Ticino feels like a different country. This Italian-speaking region sees earlier spring than the rest of Switzerland. Palms, lakes, and warm breezes arrive here before they do in Zurich or Geneva. Locarno and Lugano both offer hiking trails, yards in bloom, and a slower pace compared to the ski resorts.
