Huatulco

At Huatulco, located about 35 kilometers from Puerto Ángel, the government began developing one of Mexico’s purpose-built resorts in the 1980s on a series of previously deserted bays and beaches. The intention was to create an environmentally conscious international destination, but growth has been slower than anticipated, and international visitors remain a minority. Huatulco is a safe, clean and carefully manicured resort area in a stunning natural setting, and at first glance, it may not appear ideal for budget or independent travelers seeking the real Mexico that often inspires a Mexico food tour.

Even so, Mexico has a way of reshaping expectations. The town of La Crucecita offers a more grounded, local atmosphere with plenty of reasonably priced places to stay, eat, and drink, while the more remote beaches, some protected within a national park and left entirely undeveloped, are truly magnificent. If your priorities include relaxing on the sand, snorkeling in clear water, visiting coffee plantations, and exploring secluded coves, Huatulco can be a rewarding stop on your journey.
