start planning

Indonesia is situated right along the equator, so it's no surprise that the weather here is typically warm and humid year-round. March is no exception. However, March does fall within Indonesia's wet season, and you should anticipate frequent rain showers, often in the form of brief but intense downpours. Here's our in-depth guide to the weather in Indonesia in March, with tips from our local travel experts.

Indonesia in March at a glance

  • March in Indonesia marks the transition from the rainy season to the dry season in many regions.
  • Expect warm and humid weather with temperatures typically ranging from 75°F to 89°F (24°C to 32°C)
  • Rainfall decreases as the month progresses, but some areas may still experience occasional showers.
  • Tourist numbers are moderate in March, with fewer visitors compared to the peak season (June to September).

What is the weather like in Indonesia in March?

The weather in Indonesia in March falls right in the middle of the wet season. You’ll get high humidity and regular tropical downpours, especially in places like Java and Sumatra. Mornings often start clear, but rain usually hits in the afternoon, often as short but intense thunderstorms. Most regions see 15 to 20 rainy days this month, with around 200 to 250mm of rainfall. The eastern islands tend to be a bit drier.

March is low season, so beaches and temples are less crowded and hotel prices drop. But rain can affect boat schedules and beach conditions. The sea may be too rough for snorkeling or diving, and washed-up debris is common. You can still explore between showers; just pack light, quick-drying clothes and expect plans to shift if the weather turns. This is a great month to plan your Indonesia itinerary

Is March a good time to visit Indonesia?

Absolutely, March is a favorable time to explore Indonesia. During this month, the weather in Indonesia in March is transitioning from the wet to the dry season, which means you'll still experience some rainfall, but it is significantly less than in the peak monsoon months.

The general weather trends include warm and the occasional tropical downpour, which is usually brief and often in the late afternoon or evening. This blend of sunny and rainy days can impact travel plans slightly, but overall it doesn't hinder activities too much.

Swimming is definitely possible in March, especially in popular beach destinations like Bali, where the sea temperature remains warm and inviting.

For those looking to explore, you can enjoy cultural festivals, visit ancient temples like Borobudur and Prambanan, or explore the vibrant marine life while diving or snorkeling in places like Raja Ampat. On top of that, the lush green landscapes, nourished by the previous months' rains, make for a great backdrop for hiking and nature tours.  For more tips, see our guide to how to plan a trip to Indonesia.

What about the crowd & cost?

Because the weather in Indonesia in March is still a bit unpredictable, you’ll find that there is relatively moderate tourist traffic compared to peak months like July and August. However, March still sees a considerable number of travelers during certain weeks, especially during school vacations and spring breaks in various countries.

Hotel and flight prices are generally lower than during the high season, especially towards the beginning of the month.

For those seeking optimal weather and who are willing to face slightly more crowds, the dry season from May to September is ideal. During these months, tourist spots are busier, and prices for accommodations and flights tend to be higher. However, the weather is consistently sunny and perfect for outdoor adventures (like hitting the beach). If you're still deciding, see our guide to the best time to visit Indonesia

Where to go in Indonesia in March

March can be a smart time to visit Indonesia as the rainy season starts to fade. Here are some of the best places to visit in Indonesia

Bali

In Bali, March brings more sun between the rains, especially toward the end of the month. The rice fields are at their greenest, and you’ll see plenty of religious festivals at local temples. Surfing picks up on the west coast while the east is better for calmer beach days. Ubud’s galleries and performances are in full swing, and the weather supports a mix of outdoor time and cultural wandering. It’s a good time to go if you want to dodge high-season crowds. For more advice, see our Indonesia travel tips

Yogyakarta and Borobudur

March is a nice time to explore Java’s cultural capital. The weather gets more reliable, so sunrise at Borobudur becomes easier to catch without clouds blocking the view. The temples at Prambanan are less crowded, and the lighting’s good for photos. Around town, you’ll find batik and silversmith workshops open as usual, and local markets stay lively.

Komodo National Park

This is when Komodo starts to hit its stride. The weather is drier, which means better trekking conditions to see the famous dragons. Calm seas make island hopping easier, and snorkeling or diving trips usually go ahead without a hitch. You’ll find healthy reefs, manta rays, and colorful fish all in good view. The pink sand at Pink Beach really stands out under the sun, and visiting nearby villages adds a cultural side to the trip.

Best things to do in March

March falls between the wet and dry seasons in much of Indonesia. That means fewer crowds, lower prices, and a landscape that’s still lush and green. You’ll still get some rain, but it usually comes in short bursts that don’t derail your plans. Here are some of the best things to do in Indonesia

Dive in Raja Ampat

If diving is on your list, March is a great time for Raja Ampat. The seas are calm, visibility is good, and the marine life is incredible. You can swim with manta rays, spot reef sharks, and drift through coral yards packed with color. It’s remote and takes effort to reach, but the diving here is among the best in the world.

Experience Nyepi in Bali

Nyepi, Bali’s Day of Silence, falls in March. The entire island shuts down for 24 hours—no traffic, no lights, no noise. It’s a powerful reset, especially if you’re staying in Ubud or a more traditional village. The night before Nyepi, you can catch the Ogoh-Ogoh parade, where giant paper-mâché demons are carried through the streets, then burned to drive away evil spirits. It’s one of Bali’s most distinctive celebrations. See our pick of the best temples in Bali.

Celebrate Galungan

Galungan is another Balinese vacation that sometimes falls in March. You’ll know it’s happening when you see tall bamboo poles with decorations lining the streets. It marks the victory of good over evil, and families visit temples dressed in ceremonial clothing. It’s a beautiful time to witness Balinese culture at its most expressive.
