What about crowds and costs?
October in Ecuador typically sees fewer tourists than the peak months, making it a great option for travelers seeking a more relaxed pace.
With the lighter crowds, popular attractions are easier to access, and it’s often easier to find budget-friendly places to stay — especially helpful if you're traveling through Ecuador with kids, where space and flexibility matter.
While October is a transitional month weather-wise, lower demand keeps prices reasonable. All in all, it’s an ideal time to explore Ecuador with a bit more elbow room and a bit less strain on your wallet.
Where to go in Ecuador in October
Guayaquil
October brings less rain and slightly cooler temperatures to steamy Guayaquil, making it a better time to explore the country’s largest city. Walk the Malecón 2000 waterfront, visit the iguana-filled Parque Seminario, and climb Santa Ana hill for views across the city and river. It’s not exactly quaint — but Guayaquil has energy. On 7-day Ecuador trips, it works best as a sharp change of pace from the highlands rather than a long city stay. The food scene is growing fast, with street ceviche, craft beer joints and Afro-Ecuadorian fusion all over the place. It’s grittier than Quito, but there’s a pulse here you won’t find in the highlands.
Cajas National Park
October is the tail end of the dry season, which means more sun and fewer soggy trunks. Cajas is a surreal high-altitude landscape of over 200 glacial lakes and rolling páramo. Hike through tundra-like terrain, spot llamas and Andean ducks, and breathe in air so crisp it’ll clear your head fast. Base yourself in Cuenca, just 45 minutes away, or spend the night in a lodge at 3,000m for front-argument stargazing. Cold? Yes. But utterly, wildly beautiful.
Puerto Cayo
Quieter than Puerto López and more scenic than most beach towns, Puerto Cayo in October is blissfully uncrowded. It’s shoulder season, so accommodation is cheaper and sunsets are still fiery. Spend your days on long beach walks, spotting seabirds and fishing boats. Or visit nearby Agua Blanca, an Indigenous community with thermal pools and archaeological ruins. Puerto Cayo doesn’t try to impress you — it just quietly gets under your skin.
