Day 2: Travel to San Miguel de Allende
Travel time: 4 hours by bus
San Miguel de Allende is a showstopper, consistently ranked as one of the world's most beautiful cities. Its colonial charm – think cobbled streets, leafy plazas, and perfectly preserved 17th- and 18th-century buildings – is matched by a mild climate and a thriving arts scene. Artists have been coming here for decades, drawn by the light, the colors, and the slower pace of life.
It’s also rich in history: San Miguel is the birthplace of Mexico's independence movement, and walking its streets feels like stepping into the past. Among the most rewarding things to do in Mexico is simply to wander here, ducking into galleries, sipping coffee in hidden courtyards, or catching live music in the square at sunset.
The elevation is no joke – at 6,200 feet (1,890 meters), it’s wise to take it slow your first few hours, even if you’re used to traveling.
How to get there
To reach San Miguel, take a Primera Plus bus from Mexico City's Terminal Norte. These blue and white buses offer comfort and reliability. Book tickets in advance, especially during peak season, as the best seats fill up quickly. For scenic views, grab a seat on the right side of the bus. Taxis at the bus terminal offer a safe ride directly to the city center.
