Buses are slightly quicker, more frequent and more expensive than trains. It’s best to buy long-distance bus tickets in advance, and opt for an express (ekspresas), to avoid frequent stops. You can also pay for your ticket on board, although this doesn’t guarantee you a seat.

You should also buy long-distance train tickets in advance – stations have separate windows for long-distance and suburban (priemiestinis or vietinis) trains. Long-distance services are divided into “passenger” (keleivinis traukinys) and “fast” (greitas); the latter usually require a reservation. On timetable boards, look for isvyksta (departure) or atvyksta (arrival).
In Vilnius and Kaunas public transport is frequent and efficient: buses, trolleybuses and route taxis cover most of the city. The Curonian Spit is best explored by bicycle; bike rentals are inexpensive and plentiful.
