Culture and Etiquette in Czech Republic

It can be easy to mistake the Czechs’ shyness for surliness, and people who actually speak pretty good English will often tell you that they don’t speak it at all – it’s often from lack of confidence rather than unfriendliness, and if you can get past some initial resistance, people are usually helpful and kind. Obviously, it helps if you learn some basic words – Dobry den (hello), Na shledanou (goodbye), Prosim (please) and Děkuji vam (thank you) will take you far.

Ten percent is usual for tips, depending on the establishment: give fifteen percent for more upmarket places.
