The tradition is centered on the kurent, an early Slavic god of hedonism dating back thousands of years, who comes to scare away winter and usher in spring. Masked, clad in sheepskins and brandishing a massive club, a single kurent strikes a rather intimidating figure. And yet, hundreds of them take to the narrow streets of Ptuj, accompanied by hordes of other paraders.
