Munich is a heavyweight on the international classical music scene. The orchestra at the Bayerische Staatsoper, principally at the Nationaltheater, is under the direction of the American Kent Nagano, while in 2012 Lorin Maazel assumes the role of chief conductor of the Münchner Philharmoniker (mphil.de). Additional orchestras include the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (br-klassik.de) and its sister orchestra, the Münchner Rundfunkorchester.
