Where to go in Chile in March
March is shoulder season in Chile, when the weather stays pleasant but crowds start to thin. Here are some of the best places to visit in Chile.
Santiago and wine valleys
This is harvest time in the valleys around Santiago, so lots is happening at local wineries. Many open for tastings, and some let you help with the grape picking, which can add an easy seasonal focus to 5-day Chile trips based in the capital.
The city itself feels more relaxed after summer. You’ll find good food, interesting exhibitions, and easy day trips to the coast or foothills. Valparaíso is still warm and colorful, with fewer people on the funiculars. If you're into food and wine, this stretch of central Chile is ideal in March.
Atacama Desert
March brings clear skies and cooler evenings in the Atacama, perfect for stargazing or visiting the geysers early in the day. Salt apartments shine under the sun, and flamingos gather near the lagoons. You can walk through Martian-like landscapes in the Valley of the Moon, then head up to high-altitude lakes where the mountains reflect in still water. It’s dry, quiet, and easy to spend days here just driving, walking, and stopping wherever the light shifts.
Torres del Paine
Patagonia is calmer in March. Winds drop, the air feels crisp, and some trees start showing early fall color. The popular trails are still open, but you’ll see fewer people and more wildlife. Pumas are more visible now that the grass has thinned, and guanacos graze close to the road. Refugios and park transport still run on regular schedules, making this a good time to do multi-day hikes without summer congestion. For more advice see our Chile travel tips.
