Day02

From the Karst Plateau to Miramare Castle

Start your Italy travel in Trieste by boarding the vintage Opicina tram to the Karst plateau. The panoramic ride climbs into green karst landscapes whose cliffside views feel completely different from the Alpine and lakeside scenery people seek on an Italian peaks and lakes trip, giving this day its own distinct character. It’s the perfect starting point for a guided or solo hike with sweeping views of the city and sea.

Descend along an old fishermen’s path, pass a historic 1857 railway station, and finish in the Miramare Castle Park. Relax in the gardens, tour the castle, and, in season, swim. Back in Trieste, you will still have time to explore the centre and enjoy local cuisine.

Day03

Lipica Stud Farm

Reach the historic Lipica Stud Farm through tree-lined avenues and an old Austro-Hungarian cart track, entering the Slovenian Karst on a gentle one-hour walk.

Watch Lipizzan herds on green meadows and explore ancient stables. Join a guided tour of the stables and the interactive Lipizzan museum, then wander the estate at leisure.

Pause at the nearby valley of the Blessed Virgin of Lourdes, a 19th-century karst sanctuary, before private transfer back to Trieste.

Day04

Rosandra Valley Nature Reserve

Travel to the village of Bagnoli by local transport and walk the ancient salt road toward the Rosandra stream, passing a 35 metre waterfall, twenty-one natural pools, an old pilgrimage church, and mill ruins.

Visit the near-deserted village of Botač and the historic border toll booth. Then climb to the Karst plateau to follow the route of the former Austro-Hungarian Trieste to Hrpelje railway, then up to Mount Stena (422 m) for sweeping views over Val Rosandra and the Gulf of Trieste before returning to Bagnoli.

Day05

Grotta Gigante and Trieste

Conclude your stay in Trieste with a visit to the karst wonder Grotta Gigante. A private transfer brings you to the Guinness-listed largest cave for a speleological guided walk along an illuminated path descending about 100 meters.

Return above ground to explore the museum's karst displays. After the visit, return to the city, collect stored luggage at your accommodation, then continue independently or journey home.
