European by birth, I moved to Brazil decades ago and love living in fascinating Rio de Janeiro. Growing up in Belgium, speaking different languages came naturally to me and nowadays I communicate in six in total, even though Portuguese and English are my most common day-to-day languages.

I founded our tour operator in the early 2000s after working in a large hotel in Rio de Janeiro prior to that. Our team, including your local expert Viviane, is an international, multi-lingual eclectic group and we also have a great portfolio of guides in many different languages and of many different specialities: no matter if you’re looking for a historian explaining the European heritage in Brazil or an ornithologist to accompany you to the Amazon, we’ve got you covered. And of course, carnival in our home city Rio is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for any traveler!

Our tours are most suited to those looking to cover several cities or regions in Brazil, wanting to make the most out of their time.

“Eric Van Hecke crafted an unforgettable experience for us in Argentina and Brazil. During the planning process, he was patient and worked to tailor the trip to our specific requests. Our hotel stays, transfers, and guides were wonderful. We got off to a rocky start in Rio and Eric stopped by the restaurant to meet us. He listened to our concerns and made a much appreciated change. What a surprise that he came to personally meet us. Throughout our travels he was always available by telephone. Eric’s planning allowed us to relax and enjoy our time in South America with worrying about flights, transfers, and booking private excursions. Thank you!”

“Eric organised our Brazil holiday perfectly. He was a real pleasure to work with and always responded promptly to all our questions. We had the opportunity of meeting Eric in Rio which was really great. He also kept in touch throughout our trip to ensure things were running smoothly. All the guides at the various destinations we visited were excellent. Very pleasant personalities and full of local knowledge. Overall a fantastic holiday organised by an excellent company”

“I had a great tour of Rio Roosevelt including a stay with the Cinta Larga tribe. I would like to thank my translator Rebecca, driver and guide Izaias Gomes, Jeff the local team coordinator and Eric from Rough Guides. They all did an excellent job for my custom tour and I highly recommend them.”

“Eric was amazing at coordinating our trip to Brazil. Our itinerary was quite complex and customized, with several internal flights and transfers and everything worked perfectly. Hotels were great and guides were always professional. I would have never been able to realistically put this together alone and I highly recommend his services.”

“picked up on time by Marcelo (Carlos). Full of information, talked non-stop all the way to the Aldea de la Selva! Hotel was nice, "jungley" but the food and service were good. Clean rooms. Next day to Iguazu - again Marcelo was full of information, got us past queues and again gave us lots of info about the park, the wildlife and of course the falls. Next day to Iguassu. Immigration was predictably slow, but we got to the park in about 90 minutes. Amazing! Definitely best to see Argentine side first. The boat trip was fantastic if a little wet! The Itaipu dam was off because it was apparently closed for a tour guides convention, so we went to Itaipu Nature Park (?) which was not great to be honest. I would rather have been at the hotel a couple of hours earlier and enjoyed the pool and cocktails. Grand Carima is a typical resort hotel, not like the ones I had been staying at previously, but as said the pool although a bit hot was a welcome relaxer along with a few cocktails. Room was OK. Picked up on time for the airport and seen through check-in by Marcelo. Flight was good. Met at Cuiaba by Ana who was superb all the way through. Hotel was good. Transfer was long but good and Ana was also very informative, but not continuously 😂. The Pousada was a bit basic to be honest as I said before, but having said that it was adequate. We got flooded out of our room by a leaky roof during a tropical storm, but that was dealt with fine. The food was basic and repetitive but again adequate, and the drinks were cheap! The excursions were, it seemed, a problem and Ana seemed to be having a bit of a struggle to get us on trips, but that said they were good and entertaining with plenty of wildlife. We shared a couple with another guide who seemed to be somewhat misogynist, and basically talked over Ana and seemed put out when she saw wildlife that he didn't, but she dealt with it really well. I felt a bit sorry for her, but she was great. Transfer back to the airport was fine, and again Ana saw us through check-in before leaving us. Flights were good. Met on time at Rio by Bruno who was again informative and keen to make sure we had a good time. Disappointed that we only could fit in the 2 main bits as they took a long time, but the lunch you set up was superb! We did stroll over the road to Copacabana beach and were surprised that nobody was swimming, until I stepped into the sea - freezing!!! Took ourselves to the Escadaria next morning which was fun, then cleared the room by 12:30 and spent a few hours by the pool enjoying Capairinhas and sunshine. Pedro was on time for the transfer to the airport, and again ensured we were through check-in before leaving. A great experience mainly, and will thoroughly recommend you to anyone we know who is thinking of Brazil. Thanks”

Our travel agent was very responsive to my questions and concerns. We developed an amazing itinerary where we had one on one guides that spoke English the entire time. We stayed in great hotels and had amazing excursions. We will definitely be using their services in the future!”

My name is Gabriela, and I grew up in the colorful landscapes of Salta, where my love for travel and culture first began. Guided by curiosity, I’ve explored remote nature, diverse traditions, and the stories that shape each place. The more I traveled, the more I appreciated the richness of Argentina and South America. “Rough Guides partnered with local tourism operators to develop a wonderful exciting itinerary for our group of four. Throughout the trip I had regular communication via WhatsApp and never felt ignored or without a sense of support. This was critically important because several unforeseen setbacks occurred during our trip. A critical flight was canceled that jeopardized our entire itinerary. The Local team worked swiftly and efficiently to figure out the most timely and efficient way for us to get back on our schedule. In Uyuni, I fell and broke my arm. Our local guide and driver were absolutely amazing in caring for me and getting me to the health clinic for care. These are unusual and unexpected setbacks, and I was very appreciative that the entire team at Pure Bolivia and Rough Guides were checking in on me regularly. Normally, I travel and book my travel independently. But this time, I was very glad to have had the concierge support along the way. I will be booking more tours in the future with Rough Guides. ”

“We went on a 12 day trip that included 3 countries and many 'tours' . All hotels were lovely and well situated. All pick ups to and from the various airports (there were 7 flights involved!) went without a hitch. We had only one problem with train tickets which was dealt with within the hour. In short, we had a really great time and I was very happy that we had used Jeferson's services. Couldn't have been better. Thank you very much, Jeferson and Rough Guides”

“I’ve now used Rough Guides twice first for Oman and now for LATAM and both trips have been exceptional from start to finish. Our recent LATAM itinerary was incredibly well organised despite involving multiple countries, flights, transfers, tours, and moving parts. Everything felt seamless. We were consistently checked in ahead of flights, boarding passes were shared proactively, and communication throughout the trip was excellent. Jeferson was always available when needed and incredibly responsive and helpful throughout. Some standout moments included the food tour in Lima, which was honestly one of the highlights of the trip and such a brilliant way to experience a city. Iguazu Falls and Machu Picchu were absolutely awe-inspiring, visiting both a natural wonder of the world and one of the world’s great historical wonders in the same trip felt truly magical. We did have one minor hiccup with the train to Machu Picchu, but it was handled quickly and professionally. A hotel was arranged immediately, logistics were reorganised smoothly, and everything was resolved with minimal stress on our side. That level of calm problem-solving really stood out. Overall, the trip was energising, exciting, and beautifully executed. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Rough Guides, and I’m already planning my next trip with them, Sri Lanka next! Thank you again to Jeferson and the wider team for such a memorable experience. ✨🙌🏾🙏🏾”

“Our second experience using Insight Guides made for a worry-free trip that included Cusco, Lake Titicaca and the Peruvian Amazon: transfers were always on time, flexible if we wanted to change times a bit, and drivers and guides super friendly. Of the three contact people who coordinated itineraries, I have to single out Benjamin who was so helpful, friendly and responsive. Suggestion early on that we opt for Titicaca Lodge rather than another hotel was made by our initial contact, Jeferson, and was spot on: We could not have had a better experience on a floating island so thanks to Jeferson for that advice. My advice to others: Double check the details and really pin down exactly what you are getting. The promised cooking class in Cusco was not as billed, and just involved us watching a busy kitchen prepare local cuisine for lunch -- which was good but definitely not hands-on as promised. In the Amazon we had asked twice about the level of room we were getting; asked for Comfort which was an upgrade, were promised we were getting all Premium rooms but when we got to the Rainforest Lodge we were told we had booked a Standard which was super small. The lodge upgraded us to a suite which was nice and made a huge difference. Similarly our room in Lima was so small that we practically fell over each other -- even though we were told by Insight that all our accommodation was premium (it turns out we were in the smallest, cheapest room in that hotel). We worked with Benjamin to change hotels for our final two nights which cost a bit of extra but made for a much better experience. So double check every detail that is part of the itinerary and make sure you are getting what you think you should be getting for your money. The devil is always in the details.”

“This trip was so important to me and my family for my 70th birthday and for my 2 sons to know and understand their roots! My mom was born in Ambato, Ecuador 🇪🇨 and since she has passed I have always wanted to go to her country of origin! I have nothing but praise and appreciations and gratitude towards Responsible Travel via (Rough Guides) Travel agency for an amazing 🤩 and fun filled vacation! Everything went well with our itinerary and activities that Jeferson planned. He really knew what I/we wanted to experience, plus we were able to visit with my cousins! Our driver & guide was exceptional. Mateo kept us safe and we felt at home. He knew all the history of the places we went to & explained the culture and local lifestyle etc. The activity guides were great & they too (Olga, Rigo, Andre, Candy, Leo, & Karin) kept us safe and knew all about the Galapagos, and the volcanoes 🌋 etc…! All were professional and very well organized! I would highly recommend this company & travel agency to anyone that asks me! I/we are happy and overjoyed with the service we received! Love them! Jeferson took care of our every need 24/7. He kept me at ease when my hubby got sick, he was taken care of immediately and the staff kept him well. And Mateo was with us and took care of our every need! Extremely happy with our trip & adventures! Thank you 🙏🏽 so, so, much! We have new found friends and new life time memories to tell & write about! Respectfully, Carol Quigley & Family”

“I can't praise or recommend the Rough Guides strongly enough for the arrangements for our month in Peru with our two young children. When planning the trip, RGs were attentive, responsive, cheerful, sympathetic and constructive. The trip we ended up with was amazing: we achieved exactly what we dreamed of - and more. The travel partner RG partnered with in Peru were absolutely first class: everything happened like clockwork with local guides who were professional, informative, kind and always went the extra mile. We had genuine 24/7 contact with their Peruvian head office too, which eliminated a great deal of potential stress and prevented a number of logistical mishaps in circumstances outside their control. We would definitely recommend RG and are certainly going to use them again for our next big adventure!”

I got exactly what I wanted, recommendations, tours, transportation arrangements etc. The local operator was very good at back and forth exchanges, asked great questions to help with recommendations that suited our travel plans and style. The local tour arranger, Nick, also checked on us multiple times via Whatsapp during the trip to ensure things were going as planned. He also had great tips for foods to try, and insider information. Couldn't have been more pleased and plan to use Rough Guides for any travel outside the USA”

“Deciding to use Rough Guides for our trip to Colombia was a great decision. Maria Jose and team were great from the start. The preliminary planning meetings were easy to arrange and the team listened to our requirements and planned a great trip. We were a bit nervous as the final itinerary was late getting to us, but everything worked out so well and was even better than described. The drivers and guides were top quality, always on time and very knowledgeable. In country support was very responsive and helpful- it couldn’t have been easier for us as a multi-site trip. If you are planning a trip to Colombia, we would recommend Rough Guides but would suggest you don’t need a guide for the Salt Cathedral or the Thermal Spa (Santa Rosa). Main sites are very busy first week of January so bear this in mind. If you like nature, we wish we had stayed overnight in Tayrona National Park so do look at that as an option. Would definitely use this team again. Thank you for a wonderful trip.”

“The tour advisor was extremely helpful and helped us to build a bespoke tour. However, what actually happened was not exactly what we thought we had booked. We had booked a 5 day 4 night trip to the Peruvian Amazon Jungle and were expecting to have all 4 nights in one place, we had to transfer to a second lodge in the final night in order to do one of the excursions that we had booked, we only found out about this when we arrived in the first lodge. We had also booked a trip to a chocolate plantation to see the whole process from growing the cacao beans to producing a chocolate bar. Our lodge did not seem to know that we had done this and had us booked for a fishing expedition. We did neither in the end, but the (trainee) tour guide arranged for us to have a chocolate preparation/cooking session in stead at the lodge. Not what we had booked. The level of English for the tour guide was also very poor, which did not help our overall experience. Having said that, we did have a good time in the trip.”

“The itinerary covered all the places we wanted to visit and it was great to have the internal flights, transport and logistics organised for us. The arrangements put in place worked very well and saved us a lot of time and hassle, enabling us to enjoy the trip even more. Overall we had a great time. The one point for improvement was the choice of some of the hotels we were allocated. Many of them were really more suited to and dealt mostly with large groups of travellers so the two of us did feel rather "second best" and squeezed at times as we competed for service (and even food) with large coach parties. Smaller, more boutique style places (like those generally recommended in the Rough Guide itself) would have been better for us.”

“Our trip to Ecuador spanned a variety of regions from Galapagos to Yasuni, ending at the Volcanic region of Ecuador. This complex 2 week trip with young kids was made possible thanks to Rough Guides and their Ecuador partner. Instead of pushing back on our requests, they accommodated all our needs, staying in touch throughout the planning process. We have booked previous trips with Rough Guides as well, and they even appreciated us as repeat travelers. A shoutout to Tamer and Maria Jose for their attention and support during the planning process as well as during the trip. As with any trip, there were minor hurdles and issues here and there, Maria was regularly seeking feedback and helping either resolve the issues, or provide complementary dinner as a token. All the guides were very friendly and accommodating. But we were especially impressed with Daniel for Quito and surrounding areas and Jose for the Yasuni experience. Daniel was passionate about sharing his love for Ecuador with us. He helped us through long, tiring journeys ensuring that kids felt cared for. Jose from Yasuni Cultural Center went out of the way to ensure that my little kids are able to enjoy the wilderness of the Amazon basin. “My husband and I (80 and 79) just returned from a 47-day trip to Peru. What a great experience: Lima, Ballesta Islands, Ica, Huacachina, Arequipa, Colca Canyon (and condors!), Puno, train to Cusco, Machu Pichu and the Sacred Valley, and finally an Amazon cruise. Rough Guides planned the entire trip. Tamer and Maria Jose, who is their local travel expert for Peru, listened carefully to what we wanted, created a plan for us, modified it as we re-thought things, and then booked all the lodging, internal transfers, and a few tours. The boutique hotels were wonderful. For the most part, the transfers from place to place went smoothly. Everyone was attentive to our needs. However, connecting up with our guides in Aguas Calientes (we found the hotel on our own) and at Machu Pichu was difficult, largely a result of holiday crowds. If we were doing it again, we would have arranged to spend more time in Machu Pichu perhaps even staying at the Park for 1 or 2 nights. The 7-night Amazon cruise on La Perla was spectacular. The lodging, food, naturalist guides, crew, wildlife viewing were amazing. A nice way to end the trip. Highly recommend. Thank you, Tamer!”

Because everyone has different levels of fitness we didn’t all make the hike at the same pace. It would have been better t tell the group before hand what time to meet up back down the van. And although we were dropped off near our hotel after the tour I expected to be dropped off at our hotel as we were picked up from there. The reason given was that the van was too big to come through the alley of our hotel which I found a bit strange as it was the same van that picked us up in the morning. Otherwise everything else was great. Communication with the booking of the whole trip was great and they were even checking up on us to make sure that everything was going smoothly. Thank you again cx”

“The organization of my trip was complicated with many internal flights, transfers and tours at 4 locations through out Peru and every time our drivers and guides were on time. Tours were run with professionalism and when any problems arose the communication from both the main rough guides liaison and the local guides were prompt and they were able to solve the issue quickly.”

I grew up in a small village in the French wine country, surrounded by vineyards and quiet beauty. While it was an idyllic place to grow up, I always felt a strong urge to explore beyond it. Before settling in Bolivia, I lived and worked in several countries, starting my career in sales and negotiation. Eventually I moved into tourism to give my work greater meaning, because for me travel is about human connection, not consumption. Today I lead Terra Bolivia with a clear conviction: Bolivia is one of Latin America’s most preserved and least understood countries. My ambition is to design immersive, personal journeys that leave travelers with wonder, perspective and a real desire to return.
