Among the many historic B&Bs on the leafy streets off Turner, Langdon House, 135 Craven St (t 252/728-5499, w; $131–160), is relaxed, with delicious breakfasts. The Inlet Inn, a waterfront hotel at 601 Front St (t 252/728-3600, w; $101–130), has large, plain, balcony rooms and rocking chairs on the deck.

Beaufort’s waterfront is vibrant at night, with yachties and vacationers strolling, drinking and listening to music at the Dock House (t 252/728-4506). Decent bars and restaurants line the boardwalk, with other good options a block or so inland. The Beaufort Grocery Co, 117 Queen St (closed Tues; t 252/728-3899), prides itself on inventive Southern food made from superbly fresh ingredients, while the buzzy Aqua, 114 Middle Lane (t 252/728-7777; dinner only, closed Sun & Mon), offers Modern American “small plates” and wines by the glass.
