A taxi into town from Hilo International Airport, on the eastern outskirts, costs around $12. From Kamehameha Avenue, Hilo’s Hele-On bus (t 808/961-8744, w operates services to Kailua and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

Two good hostels offer reasonably priced private rooms and dorms; the attractive Hilo Bay Hostel is downtown at 101 Waianuenue Ave (t 808/933-2771, w; dorms $25, private rooms $61–80), while Arnott’s Lodge is in the woods two miles southeast at 98 Apapane Rd (t 808/969-7097, w; dorms $25, private rooms $61–80), and also offers tent spots for $10, plus island tours. Otherwise, the Dolphin Bay, 333 Iliahi St (t 808/935-1466 or t 1-877/935-1466, w; $101–130), is a friendly little hotel. The Seaside Restaurant, 1790 Kalanianaole Ave (t 808/935-8825; closed Mon) is a great local fish restaurant with its own aquafarm.
