Explore Trentino-Alto Adige
Some 20km to the south of Trento and a mere 13km from Lago di Garda, ROVERETO is a small town with one stellar attraction – the Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (MART). This outstanding gallery with world-class exhibitions is one of Trentino’s unmissable experiences, but Rovereto itself, with its stylish palazzi containing university faculties and a young feel on the streets, is worth the other half of the day that’s left after a visit.
Easily accessible from Verona, Trento and Bolzano, Rovereto is best tackled as a day-trip.

MART
Italy’s largest modern-art museum, the Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (MART) was designed by Mario Botta and opened in December 2002. The spectacular building, with spacious galleries wrapping themselves around a central circular atrium flooded with light, is impressive enough before you view the art inside. Skilfully curated, themed exhibitions use works loaned from institutions and individuals around the world as well as drawing on the gallery’s collection of 30,000 paintings, design pieces and sculptures by big-hitting names including Lichtenstein, Rauschenberg and Warhol (as well as lesser-known locals such as Italian Futurist Fortunato Depero, Giorgio de Chirico and Giorgio Morandi). At least four large shows run at any one time and previous installations have covered Postmodernism, futuristic car design, Schiele, Klimt and Kokoschka, and Alice in Wonderland in art and design. Allow at least three hours to see everything.
