Eating and drinking

The town’s main street has a good choice of places to eat, while the pick of the pubs is the atmospheric De Barra’s, 55 Pearse St (t 023/883 3381, w, with live music most evenings, including a popular traditional session on Mondays. An Teach Beag, a reconstructed traditional cottage at the back of O’Donovan’s Hotel, has Irish music (sometimes augmented by set dancing and storytelling) every night during July and August, and on Saturdays throughout the year, and there’s more trad on Tuesdays in the hotel itself. Around the corner on Connolly Street, Shanley’s Piano Bar (t 023/883 3790) hosts all sorts of live music, including jazz, folk and bluegrass.
