Culture and etiquette

Hungarians are generally very ready to help if you need directions or assistance. The biggest barrier can be language – in Budapest you can survive on English but elsewhere you will likely need to muster a little German, as well as the polite basics in Hungarian. When tipping waiters and taxi-drivers, roughly ten percent is more or less expected.

Hungary’s dominant religion is Catholicism but there are many Protestant churches. Respectful clothing is expected in places of worship. Women travellers should not expect any particular hassle in Hungary.
