The risk of stomach troubles is particularly high while trekking. Follow the general travel advice on fresh food and clean water, and note that while innkeepers normally boil water and tea, it is not always for long enough, and at high altitudes the boiling point of water is so low that a longer boiling time is necessary. All running water should be assumed to be contaminated – almost wherever you go, there will be people, or at least animals, upstream. Treating water is not only the best line of defence against illness, it also reduces your reliance on boiled or bottled water, both of which cause significant environmental problems in mountain areas.
