Buses from Kottayam (every 30min; 4hr), Ernakulam (10 daily; 6hr) and Madurai in Tamil Nadu (at least hourly; 5hr 30min) pull in to the scruffy bus stand east of the main bazaar. Auto-rickshaws will run you from here to the visitor centre inside the park for around Rs50–60, stopping at the park entrance at Thekkady for you to pay the fee (see The sanctuary).
To book any of the Periyar Tiger Reserve’s popular eco-tourism tours, you’ll have to walk down the Thekkady Road to the eco-tourism centre on Ambadi Junction (daily 9am–8pm, last tickets sold at 7.30pm; t 04869/224571) – or better still, book in advance.
Both the State Bank of Travancore (which has an ATM), near the bus stand, and the Thekkady Bankers in the main bazaar can change currency and travellers’ cheques. Internet facilities are available around Thekkady Junction for about Rs40 per hour.Read More
