1. No purchase necessary to enter the competition.
  2. This competition is open to residents of the UK, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand, Canada (excluding Québec) and the USA aged 18 years or over, with the exception of employees of the Promoter, their families, agents and anyone else connected with this promotion.
  3. Entrants must not previously have had a whole fiction or non-fiction book published commercially and must not have had more than four short pieces of paid-for writing (e.g an essay or an article) published in the last year.
  4. Entries must be received by 12:59 BST on 1 May 2016. The Promoter accepts no responsibility for any entries that are incomplete, illegible, corrupted or fail to reach the Promoter by the relevant closing date for any reason. Proof of posting or sending is not proof of receipt. Automatically generated entries or entries via agents or third parties are invalid and shall not be considered. Entries become the property of the Promoter and are not returned.
  5. Only one entry per person. No entrant may win more than one prize.
  6. To enter write a 500-word travel story on one of the following three themes: close to home; the most beautiful place in the world; my best day on Earth. Then send your entry along with personal details, including name, age, address and email address to [email protected]. Entries submitted electronically must be either a .docx (Microsoft Word) file, or pasted into the email itself.
  7. All correctly completed entries will be forwarded to a judging panel made up of the Rough Guides Web Editors, gapyear.com’s Web Editor and an independent judge. The winner will be the entry that in the opinion of the judges is the best entry in terms of writing style, flair and story told.
  8. The prize for the winner is 1 x Rough Guides Make the Most of Your Time on Earth book; 1 x Rough Guides Best Day on Earth book and 1 x Rough Guides Colour the World book; and a £2000 voucher to spend solely with gapyear.com on a trip or flights of their choice. The voucher must be used i.e. flights and/or trip must be taken by 31 October 2017 and there will be no extensions to this date. Dates must be requested at least 30 days before travel is due to commence. The prize is non-transferable and is to be used by the registered prize winner only. In the event that the winner cannot utilise the voucher and take the trip or flights, the Promoter reserves the right to offer the prize to a substitute winner.
  9. The winners are responsible for obtaining all necessary visas, valid passports and travel insurance or other travel documentation. Flights are non-transferable, non-changeable and non-refundable once confirmed.
  10. Two runners up will each receive 1 x Rough Guides Make the Most of Your Time on Earth book; 1 x Rough Guides Best Day on Earth book and 1 x Rough Guides Colour the World book.
  11. The judges’ decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.
  12. Other than those specified above, the promoter shall not be liable for any costs or expenses arising out of or in any way connected with this prize and does not accept any responsibility for any damage, loss or disappointment suffered by the winner as result of accepting this prize.
  13. The prizes are non-transferrable and no cash alternative will be offered.
  14. The prize is subject to availability. In the event of unforeseen circumstances, the Promoter reserves the right (a) to substitute alternative prizes of equivalent or greater value and (b) in exceptional circumstances to amend or foreclose the promotion without notice. No correspondence will be entered into.
  15. The winner will be notified via email by May 28 2016. The winner must respond to confirm whether they accept their prize and must contact gapyear.com to claim their prize within 30 days of the Promoter sending notification. If the prize is unclaimed after this time, it will lapse and the Promoter reserves the right to offer the unclaimed prize to a substitute winner selected in accordance with these rules. The prize must be claimed directly from gapyear.com.
  16. By entering this competition each entrant confirms that his/her entry is their wholly-owned creation and to the extent that such entry makes use of any third party materials that these have been fully cleared unless they are no longer protected by copyright or other intellectual property rights. Entrants will keep the Promoter harmless from any claims in relation to their entry that the entry infringes the personal or proprietary right of any other person. By submitting an entry, each entrant grants to the Promoter a perpetual, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to edit, publish, translate, modify, adapt, make available and distribute the entry throughout the world in any media now known or hereafter invented. The winning entrant and the two runners up further assign to the Promoter the entire copyright and all other rights insofar as they belong to him/her of whatsoever nature in and to their entry throughout the World in any media now known or hereafter invented for the full period of copyright and all renewals and extensions thereof and the winning entrant and two runners up further waive all moral rights in his/her entry. Each entrant undertakes to complete any necessary documentation to formalise the licence. If you do not want to grant us these rights, please do not submit materials to us.

  18. The Promoter will use any data submitted by entrants only for the purposes of running the competition, unless otherwise stated in the entry details. By entering this competition, all entrants consent to the use of their personal data by the Promoter for the purposes of the administration of this competition and any other purposes to which the entrant has consented.
  19. The winners agree to take part in reasonable post event publicity and to the use of their names and photographs in such publicity. The winners also agree to provide an interview for gapyear.com within 30 days after return from their trip.
  20. Promoter may disqualify any entrant whose entry does not comply with these terms and conditions (in Promoter’s sole opinion) or who, in Promoter’s sole determination, has acted in a manner that is fraudulent, dishonest or unjust to other entrants including, without limitation, tampering with the operation of the competition, manipulating or rigging votes, hacking, deceiving, cheating or by harassing or threatening other entrants or a representative of Promoter.
  21. By entering the competition each entrant agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions.
