Road trips

The world’s eighth-largest country is laced by roads that pass through an astonishing variety of landscapes. Most famously, Ruta 40 skirts the Andes to zip through Patagonia and beyond. We also like the two-day Cafayate–Cachi circuit and the polychrome Quebrada de Humahuaca.

Meet the ancestors

Argentina is a country of immigrants. Follow Old World traditions and enjoy cakes in the Welsh teahouses of Gaiman and Trevelin, wander through colourful Genoese Boca, and sup locally brewed beer in Germanic Villa General Belgrano and Bariloche.

Breathtaking views

Picking Argentina’s finest view is an impossible task, but our favourites include Glaciar Perito Moreno and Monte Fitz Roy in Patagonia, Cerro Catedral in the Lake District, and, of course, the Iguazú Falls in the Northeast.

Wildlife encounters

Argentina is a wildlife haven with whales off Península Valdés, Magellanic penguins at Punta Tombo and vicuñas in the Northwest – just make sure the coatis don’t steal your lunch at the Iguazú Falls.

Favourite wines

Argentina is one of the world’s leading producers of vino and the quality improves every harvest. Vineyard tours are highpoints of any visit to the Lake District, Salta Province or El Cuyo. Or else crack open a bottle of malbec or torrontés at a top restaurant in Buenos Aires.

Most romantic estancia

The marvellous estancia of La Bamba may have been the setting for a film about a tragic love story but that shouldn’t put off honeymooners. The wild isolation of Patagonia or the colonial charms of the Northwest also lend themselves to memorable holiday trysts.
