The Sharjah Art Museum provides the main venue for the Sharjah Biennial (wsharjahbiennial.org), held from March to May every odd-numbered year. First staged in 1993, the Biennial is now a major fixture on the international art calendar and has gained a reputation for innovation notably at odds with Sharjah’s ultra-conservative cultural regime. Things came to a head during the 2011 Biennial when director Jack Persekian was sacked by the ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammad al Qassimi, after allegations that one of the festival’s exhibits – Maportaliche/Ecritures Sauvages by Algerian artist Mustapha Benfodil, featuring 23 headless mannequins dressed as two football teams and a referee – contained “offensive” texts printed on the dummies’ shirts, while a number of demonstrators peacefully protesting the killings of pro-democracy activists in Bahrain were simultaneously hauled off by police for questioning.
