Occupying a large modern wind-towered building just off Corniche Street, the Sharjah Art Museum is the major showpiece in Sharjah’s attempts to position itself as a serious player in the international art scene. The ground floor is devoted to temporary exhibitions, while upstairs, the museum’s new permanent gallery of modern Arabian art holds a wide range of works created in the past four decades from countries across the region in an eclectic range of styles and media – all technically proficient, although none lingers long in the memory.

Running between the Art Museum and the Creek is the recently restored  Souk Saqr (aka Souk al Bahar), traditionally associated with the gold and textile trade, although it now has a rather Iranian flavour, with a line of fairly run-of-the-mill shops shaded beneath a traditional palm-thatch roof, and the occasional old stone building between.
