Once a much larger territory that now lies between Romania and neighbouring Hungary and Serbia, the featureless plains of Banat were ruled from Timişoara until the Turks conquered it in 1552; they governed until 1716 when they were ousted by the Habsburgs. The region’s current frontiers were drawn up during the Versailles conference of 1918–20. Today, Romanian Banat is still home to a diverse population that for centuries has included Slovaks, Bulgarians, Ukrainians and Germans living alongside Serbians, Romanians and Hungarians.
