CITTÀ DI CASTELLO is a charming and little-visited town some 56km to the north of Perugia in the Upper Tiber valley, with a sedate and ordered medieval centre that’s well worth a few hours. It’s also increasingly the focus for visitors staying in the many rented villas and farmhouses in hills to the east and west. In late August and early September the town becomes busier than usual during its renowned Festival of Chamber Music (w festivalnazioni.com), dedicated to a different country each year.

Once an important Roman centre – the grid-iron of streets is virtually the only legacy – today the plain-bound site preserves just a handful of fairly mediocre medieval monuments. The town’s main attractions are a trio of museums and an art gallery, along with some quiet, pleasant medieval streets.
