Accommodation tends to fill up during high season, so you should aim to book ahead. Hostels are increasingly common in the main tourist destinations, while across the country, the tradition of the homely pension (panzió) or guesthouse (vendégház) still thrives, ranging from rooms in private homes to more professional outfits. Here, expect to pay from 8000Ft for a double. If you’re really strapped for cash, try for university dorms – rooms are rented out in July and August, and often available at weekends year-round; local tourist offices can assist with bookings. Private rooms (vendégszoba) and apartments are also affordable and can be arranged through Ibusz, the nationwide agency (w www.ibusz.hu), or local tourist offices. Doubles range from 4000Ft in provincial towns to around 6000Ft in Budapest. Budget hotels are often rather old-fashioned; outside Budapest and Lake Balaton (where prices are thirty percent higher), a three-star hotel (szálló or szálloda) will charge from around 12,000Ft for a double; solo travellers may have to pay this too, since singles are not always on offer.
Campsites range from deluxe to third class. In high season, expect to pay around 800Ft per person per night, and up to twice as much around Lake Balaton.
