In 1895, Auguste and Louis Lumière filmed the first moving pictures in La Ciotat – the town’s main claim to fame. The world’s oldest movie house, the Eden Cinema, still stands today, the subject of a €5 million restoration project to coincide with Marseille’s stint as European Capital of Culture. The town has an annual film festival and the brothers are also commemorated by a monument on plage Lumière.
