1 Memsaab Restaurant, Nottingham
This hard-to-beat Indian restaurant brings sophisticated style and oodles of gastronomic flair to Nottingham’s dining scene. Everything’s good, but try the Amritsari Machli (fried cod) for a fail-safe bet.
2 Newstead Abbey
One-time home of Lord Byron, this intriguing old mansion has superb period rooms, lots of Byron memorabilia, and lovely gardens.
3 Hardwick Hall
A beautifully preserved Elizabethan mansion that was home to the formidable Bess of Hardwick, one of the leading businesspeople of the sixteenth century. The gardens and surrounding parkland are wonderful, too.
4 Lincoln Cathedral
One of the finest medieval cathedrals in the land, dominating this fine old city and seen to best advantage on a rooftop guided tour. Watch out for the Lincoln imp!
Lincolnshire’s prettiest town, with its cobbled lanes, lovely old churches, and ancient limestone buildings, well deserves an overnight stay – and you can eat in style here too.
