A good range of hiking trails traverse the mountains, often visiting waterfalls or circling the peaks themselves – for a start try the Artemis trail.
A particularly scenic mountain village, also hosting a fine museum and a famous church.
3 Painted churches
Ten churches in the region have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites owing to the stunning medieval frescoes they contain.
4 Kykkos Monastery
A fine example of a modern Greek Cypriot monastery, with the added interest of its links with Archbishop Makarios III – also a great place to pick up souvenirs.
There are lovely picnic areas all over the Troodos Mountains, particularly on the way to major monasteries – one of the best is at Xystarouda near Kykkos.
