1 The Venetian walls
These beautifully preserved walls may have failed to stop the Ottoman advance but are well worth exploring today, not least for their impressive views.
2 Laiki Geitonia
The old city’s quaintest area, all narrow alleys and overhanging old buildings, is perfect for window-shopping and aimless wandering.
3 The Postal Museum
Hidden down a side-street, the diminuitive Postal Museum is a little gem, whether or not you’re into stamps.
4 Shacolas Tower
Though it no longer offers the frisson of peering over the Green Line into forbidden territory, the Shacolas Tower still offers fabulous views of both sides of the city.
5 The Cyprus Museum
By far the best museum on the island, this is a world-class attraction whose rather fusty presentation in no way detracts from its spectacular contents.
6 Archbishop Makarios Centre
Part of the sprawling Archbishop’s Palace, the Byzantine Galleries of the Archbishop Makarios Centre are rich in colour and atmosphere.
7 The Royal Tombs, Tamassos
Wonderfully atmospheric burial chambers dating from the time of Homer.
