Zadar has a compact centre crowded onto a thumb of land, known locally as the poluotok or “peninsula”, jutting northwest into the sea. The poluotok is made up of narrow streets and piazzas, and is largely barred to motor traffic. The poluotok’s northern waterfront, lined by a surviving section of city wall, is busy with the hustle of ferry traffic, while the southern side, along Obala kralja Petra Krešimira IV, has the air of a relaxing Riviera-town promenade, with ravishing views of the offshore islands and two compelling outdoor art installations in the shape of the Sea Organ and the Greeting to the Sun. On the eastern side of the poluotok lies the Jazine, a sheltered harbour beyond which lie the modern parts of town. Four kilometres northwest of town, the suburb of Borik (also known as Puntamika) is home to hotels and beaches – it can be reached via a lazy waterside walk or short ride on local bus #5 or #8.
