Many of the festivals up and down the Adriatic coast are actually package holidays in disguise, catering for Brits and other northwestern Europeans who simply want a long party weekend with a Mediterranean backdrop. Terraneo (w terraneofestival.com), held in August, on the other hand is the real McCoy, a genuinely international music festival that locals actually go to in large numbers. Held in the former JNA barracks midway between the city centre and the Solaris resort, it features three days of music from the best international indie/alternative names, and a range of after-gig DJ events. On-site camping is available.
Straddling a fortnight in late June/early July, the International Children’s Festival (Međunarodni dječji festival; w mdf-sibenik.com), frequently turns out to be great fun for all ages, incorporating street entertainers, musical theatre and high-quality puppet performances – as well as singing-and-dancing troupes of children from all over Croatia.
