As this is one of Namibia’s top tourist areas, places get booked up well in advance for most of the year, and prices are inevitably high, especially for the more exclusive, smaller lodges that offer a greater wilderness experience. The larger lodges with more facilities get to see a lot of tour groups in the busy periods, which inevitably can sometimes detract from the desert feel, not to mention your sleep as many set off pre-dawn to capture the sunrise experience. Note too that the back-to-nature tented options, while offering incomparable experiences, can be very chilly at night in the winter months beyond the blanketed warmth of your bed, as temperatures can drop as low as zero. Another consideration is whether your lodging has air conditioning, a must for some to cool the air, but a noisy intrusion into the stillness of the desert for others. The places listed here are all within an hour’s drive of the park entrance.
