On a fine day with your own transport, a tour of the Lüderitz Peninsula makes for a pleasant morning outing, with a sprinkling of sandy beaches and rocky inlets to explore, as well as several salt pans favoured by flamingos. Most visitors head for the classic, red-and-white striped lighthouse at Diaz Point, 20km by road from Lüderitz – take the B4 2km out of town, then turn right at the sign. Across a rickety wooden bridge there’s a replica of the granite cross erected by Bartolomeu Diaz, the pioneering Portuguese explorer credited with being the first European to visit the area, in 1487. After fortifying yourself at the coffee shop here, continue round the headland, at least as far as Guano Bay where, with a decent pair of binoculars, you can spot the jackass penguins across the water at Halifax Island, though you’ll get a better view from a boat.
