Swakop is gradually gaining a reputation for adventure sports, thanks in particular to the ever-growing list of inventive ways to enjoy the dunes, from the more established quad biking to sand-surfing to power-kiting. Here are some of the recommended specialist outfits.

Alter Action Sandboarding

t 064 405989, 9.30am–1.30pm t 081 128 2737, w alter-action.info. A guaranteed morning of adrenaline rushes as you build up to speeds of between 60–80kph on your final runs, racing down the dunes. It’s good value: US$35 to lie down (for most novices) or US$45 to stand up (if you can surf on water or snow), including transfers, a light lunch and drinks.

Desert Explorers

t 081 124 1386, w namibiadesertexplorers.com. Racing round the desert on a quad bike is fun. This company offers slightly more tours than Outback Orange, at slightly higher prices (1hr N$400, 3hr N$750), including an overnight trip. Manual or automatic quad bikes are available and helmets are provided. You can also combine quad biking with sand-boarding.

Element Riders

t 081 666 6599, w element-riders.com. The ultimate extreme sports outfit, with all kinds of options on land or water, including rock climbing, landboarding, power-kiting, surfing, kitesurfing and paragliding. Equipment for rent and for sale too.

Okakambe Trails

t 064 402799, w www.okakambe.iway.na. Established stables with well-cared-for horses offering outings of a couple of hours (NS$650) or a full day (N$1550), with multi-day camping trips for more experienced riders. Prices assume a minimum of two people.

Outback Orange

Outback Orange operate one- or two-hour quad biking tours (N$300/500), plus longer eco-excursions in the desert and tours that combine quad biking with sand-boarding. Manual or automatic quad bikes are available and helmets are provided.

Swakopmund Skydiving Club

Highly experienced outfit offering tandem skydives with an instructor for the novice (N$2100), or solo dives for the more fearless and/or experienced. Prices include pickup, training, the plane out and the dive, after which you can return to the bar to watch a DVD of your exploits over a well-earned beer.
