Accommodation in Kenya exhibits a fine diversity, ranging from campsites and local lodging houses for $4–6 a night to genuinely excellent, luxury hotels costing fifty or a hundred times as much. Beds can also be found in "tented camps" and "tree hotels" at the expensive end of the spectrum, and bandas and a clutch of youth hostels at the budget end.
If you're planning a trip to Kenya using moderate or expensive accommodation, it's useful to know that a lot of money can be saved by not going in the high season. Resort hotels and safari lodges have separate low-, mid- and high-season rates (this pattern applies much less to town hotels). Low-season rates can be anything from a third to a half of the high-season tariff. The seasons of many of the coastal, cottage-type establishments are tied closely to the school year, with the Easter and Christmas holidays, plus July and August, being considered "high". Otherwise, the following seasons apply:
Low season: After Easter to end June or mid-July (coinciding with the "Long Rains").
Mid-season: July to November or mid-December (coinciding with the "Short Rains").
High season: December to Easter (hot and sunny weather until March).
