Anta Grande do Zambujeiro Brown archeological signposts at Valverde – 7km southwest of Évora, down the N380 (Alcáçovas road) – lead you through the university's agricultural faculty grounds to the Anta Grande do Zambujeiro, a huge burial chamber lying sheltered under a corrugated iron roof. The last 1km is along a dirt track which is usually fine for cars if it hasn't been raining, but you can always leave your vehicle and walk if you're unsure.
Zambujeiro is the largest dolmen in the country, comprising eight standing stones which lean inwards to form a chamber eight metres high, with a six-metre diameter. The capstone is missing and the chamber itself is fenced off for safety reasons, but the twelve-metre-long approach corridor is still largely intact. The moving of such enormous stones must have challenged the ingenuity of the Neolithic builders, and there's still a real sense of mystery here, the only sound that of chirruping crickets and the rustle of leaves in the ancient cork and olive trees.
