The north Zealand coast
Helsingør is the gateway to the north Zealand coast, whose succession of fine sandy beaches and cute fishing villages has long made it a favoured spot for summer homes, and it's still a popular destination for weekending Copenhageners searching for sun, sand and sea. Driving along the lovely coastline provides pre-eminent glimpses of the shallow green waters and golden sand; the road is never more than a few blocks away from the beach, and if you're driving and fancy a dip, it's quite easy to park on the side of the road and walk to the dunes. A private railway operates from a small terminal adjacent to the main station in Helsingor and runs as far as the former fishing town and latter-day tourist hub of Gilleleje, stopping frequently along the coast. Alternatively, bus #340 from Helsingor covers the same stretch, as does cycle route No.47.
