2 Hotel Americano Jr Pizarro 764 044/241361 Plenty of character but a bit shabby; the rooms, like everything else in this grand old hotel, are spacious but not spotless, and only some come with private bath. It's nevertheless a favourite with budget travellers, not least for the friendly service and great prices. Price: $5–25

www.libertador.com.pe Formerly the Hotel de Turistas, this place is particularly grand, with excellent service and a superb restaurant renowned for its criolla dishes. The large, plush rooms have all modern conveniences. Price: $50
5 Hotel San Martín San Martín 743–749 044/235700252311 Lots of decent rooms in a large, rather tired-looking concrete building. Good service, and all rooms have private bath and TV. Often busy with conference goers. Price: $15–40
6 Peregrino Hotel Av Independencia 978, 044/203989 www.peregrinohotel.com While primarily a place that specialises in events and weddings, both the service and the rooms are of quite a high standard, but not cheap. There's a good bar plus restaurant and internet access available. Price: $50
7 Pullman Hotel Jr Pizarro 879 044/223589471645 ivrest@hotmail.com One of the city centre's newest and nicest hotels, the Pullman is cool and plush with solar water heating, good restaurant and bar plus all modern conveniences. Price: $40-50

11 Hostería Recreo C Estete 647 044/246991 Away from the centre but still within easy walking distance of the Plaza Mayor, this is a very comfortable hotel with friendly service and its own restaurant. Price: $15-25
12 Hostería El Sol Los Brillantes 224, off block 12 of Av Mansiche in Santa Ines 044/231933 Built in the shape of a Bavarian castle, El Sol is slightly out of the way, with dark but comfortable rooms, all with private bath. Price: $5–15
13 Hotel Primavera Av Nicolas de Pierola 872, Primavera district 044/231915 Located close to the Panamerican Highway, this concrete building lacks style but offers large, clean rooms with a/c comfort and private bath. There's also a small swimming pool, and the service is good. Price: $10-15
