In the Punchana sector of Iquitos, the Galería de Arte Amazonica (Amazon Art Gallery), exhibits the work of the Peruvian painter Francisco Grippa and a few other national and local artists. Grippa, who lives and works mainly in Pevas, arrived in the Amazon in the late 1970s after being educated in Europe and the US, and his work, described variously as figurative and expressionist, displays an obsession with light and colour, focusing on subjects such as Shipibo Indians, jungle birds and rainforest landscapes.
