Arrival

Most overseas visitors arrive in Ayacucho from Lima on a thirty-five-minute flight, which lands at the airport 4km from town – a taxi into town costs $4–5; buses cost 80¢ and leave from just outside the terminal. Nevertheless, the journey from Lima overland by bus only takes between eight and nine hours these days, or eighteen hours from Cusco. If you're arriving from Huancayo, Huancavelica, Cusco or Lima, the bus companies mostly have their depots along Jirón 3 Mascaras or Avenida Mariscal Caceres, both within a few blocks of the Plaza de Armas. Tourist information is available from Direcetur, Jr Asamblea 481 (Mon– Fri 8am–5pm; 066/312548, Eayacucho@mincetur.gob.pe) or the Municipalidad building, Portal Municipal 48, on the Plaza de Armas (Mon– Sat 9am–7pm; 066/318305, www.regionayacucho.gob.pe ), which has helpful staff who can arrange trips in the area; there's also a tourist information kiosk at the airport (Mon– Sat 8am–8pm).
