Author Pick Cross Keys Pub C Triunfo 350, second floor 229227 www.cross-keys-pub-cusco-peru.com One of the hubs of Cusco's nightlife, this classic drinking dive has the feel of a London pub, with good music, soccer scarves adorning the walls, pool tables and good beers. Food is available and there are often English-language newspapers and magazines, not surprisingly since it's owned by the British Consul.

Indigo Tecsecocha 2 260271 An atmospheric bar justly famous for its Thai cuisine and cocktails. It's best in the evenings when you can warm up by the fireplace, and there are comfortable seats, sofas and swings, games, books and hookahs.

Author Pick Los Perros Tecsecocha 436. Billing itself as "the original couch bar", Los Perros is a trendy hang-out where travellers snack, drink and play board games or read from the wide-ranging library and magazines (books can be exchanged – give two, take one). There's often jazz at weekends.

Km 0 Tandapata 100, San Blas 236009 This bar and café is small but nearly always busy and with a very international mix of musicians and drinkers; live music at weekends.

Muse Bar Tandapata 682 A bar and café art gallery, open from 9am until midnight daily, The Muse is located on the terrace above the Plazoleta San Blas. It has a cosy atmosphere, good drinks and food all day (8.30am– midnight), with tables outside; also plays live music from roughly 10pm most weekends and sometimes during the week.

Norton Rats Tavern Santa Catalina 116, second floor Just off the Plaza de Armas, with great views over the square. Best known as a bar with a spacious interior, Norton Rats serves special jungle cocktails and a couple of decent English ales. It plays rock, blues, jazz and Latin music and has a pool table and dartboard, plus satellite TV for sports. There's also a café serving grills and sandwiches.

Paddy Flaherty's Irish Pub C Triunfo 124 Looking much like a British pub, though its wood-panelled walls are garlanded with Irish artefacts and a working model train which circulates the room continuously. The atmosphere is pleasant, if busy, and there's sports TV; it gets particularly lively at weekends, when they often have live Irish music. Serves Guinness.

Rosie O'Grady's Santa Catalina 360 247935 A capacious Irish pub and great restaurant with a range of beers, Guinness included. There's great live music on Thursdays and Fridays, plus a popular Friday evening "boat race" drinking competition; satellite TV for sports.

Sumay Misky C Plateros 334 This is actually an interesting restaurant which incorporates the highly popular Nick's Sports Bar, the best range of piscos in Cusco and a satellite TV screen. As well as some spectacular and unique main dishes (including tandori guinea pig, rocoto relleno, plus quinoa and mushroom risotto) it prepares snacks like potato wedges, cheese toasties as well as alpaca and bacon patties on demand.
